A Letter From The CEO

In 2012 we shipped our first product, hoping to ignite a business that could change the world by bringing energy access to the hardest to reach through a commercially self-sustaining business model.

Now a decade since that first launch, BioLite’s energy access business in Africa is nearly twice the size of our outdoor recreation market and growing rapidly, powered by the tangible impact and economic value we deliver to our customers every day. This past year alone, we went from reaching 3.6 to 5.5 million individuals, accelerating at a pace that puts us on track to reach our goal of twenty million people by 2025.

To the broader BioLite community who helped us achieve this milestone, we hope you share in our immense pride in what we have accomplished together. Some particular highlights from 2022 include:

  • Leveraging carbon markets to cut the price of cookstoves by 40% for low-income customers, reaching an additional 440,000 customers and avoiding a cumulative total  of 1.3 million tonnes of CO2 in the process.
  • Serving an additional 1.5 million people with essential access to lighting and charging through our revolutionary SolarHome systems.
  • Introducing a line of ultra-affordable lanterns so that those who cannot afford more costly SolarHome solutions can afford that critical first step onto the energy ladder.

What began as a hypothesis ten years ago now thrives as a commercially sustainable model of change. As we embark on our second decade we’re committed to pioneering renewables, owned by individuals, as the grid of the future. We’re starting to invest in larger scales of energy on both sides of the business with the introduction of the BaseCharge series, readying ourselves to meet the demands of a new generation of customers who seek to affordably and reliably power daily life free from fossil fuels and outdated infrastructures.

Your support has given BioLite the power to envision a future where everyone can safely cook, charge and light their lives; where businesses take responsibility for their carbon; and, where all of us access energy in ways that are sustainable for both people and planet. Thank you for believing in BioLite’s power to change the world.

In Good Energy,

Jonathan Cedar
